LANCASTER, Calif., — PARRIS Law Firm announced that Partner Khail A. Parris was interviewed by FreightWaves in an article examining the firm’s $52,115,000 jury verdict in a catastrophic California trucking accident case and what the outcome may mean for motor carriers, subcontracted freight operations and roadway safety.

The FreightWaves article, titled “One crash, 3 trucking firms found liable in California nuclear verdict,” covered the Los Angeles Superior Court verdict obtained by PARRIS Law Firm on behalf of the plaintiffs, an injured motorcyclist and his wife, following a devastating semi-truck collision in Santa Clarita, California. The verdict included $45,615,000 in phase one and an additional $6.5 million in punitive damages. The PARRIS Law Firm trial team was led by Khail A. Parris, R. Rex Parris and Curtis Crawford, with key support from paralegal Marci Hilsinger.

The case arose from a 2021 crash on Creekside Road in Santa Clarita, where the injured motorcyclist was riding his motorcycle when, according to the trial evidence, a semi-truck turned left without taking proper precautions, entering the motorcycle’s path and causing a severe collision. He struck the truck head-on while traveling approximately 50 miles per hour. The crash left him with significant, life-altering injuries that required serious medical treatment and created long-term health concerns.

FreightWaves also detailed the chain of trucking companies involved in the transportation of the load. The truck was carrying a U.S. Postal Service load that had been subcontracted through multiple trucking entities before the crash. The driver was operating a truck owned by Montecristo Trucking, and the load had been subcontracted from Thunder Ridge Transport to Fames Transport, and then in part to Montecristo Trucking. The article also noted that PARRIS Law Firm argued at trial that the truck driver was in violation of federal Hours-of-Service rules at the time of the collision.

FreightWaves focused on the broader implications of the verdict for the trucking and transportation industry, particularly when freight work is passed through multiple companies or subcontracted to independent owner-operators. In the article, Khail explained that the case reinforces an important principle under California law: motor carriers cannot subcontract away their responsibility for safety.

“This verdict is an important reminder that companies cannot simply pass responsibility down the line,” said Khail Parris. “When motor carriers put freight on the road, they have a duty to make sure the work is being done safely. That duty does not disappear just because another company or driver is brought into the chain.”

The FreightWaves coverage highlights the growing attention surrounding high-value trucking accident verdicts in California and the legal duties of motor carriers involved in subcontracted freight transportation. For victims of serious semi-truck crashes, the case emphasizes the importance of examining every company involved in the transportation chain, not just the driver behind the wheel.

“We are grateful FreightWaves took a closer look at the broader issues in this case,” said R. Rex Parris, founding partner of PARRIS Law Firm. “These are the kinds of safety failures that affect everyone sharing the road with commercial trucks.”

The case is Los Angeles Superior Court Case No. 21STCV20196.
