The San Fernando Valley, known locally as “the Valley,” has a long history of its depictions in popular television shows, films, and songs.
Perhaps it is partly because of its Hollywood image—the fast cars and open roads—that the Valley contains some of Los Angeles County’s worst areas for traffic accidents.
According to an LAPD report, severe injuries from San Fernando Valley car accidents increased by 36%, up to 244. Fatalities increased by 24% to 47.

San Fernando Valley Car Accident Statistics
Located just north of the Los Angeles basin, the San Fernando Valley is home to roughly 2 million people, many of who commute to downtown Los Angeles for work. The Valley includes several neighborhoods within the city of Los Angeles, along with Burbank, Calabasas, Glendale, San Fernando, and Hidden Hills.
Though most parts of the Valley have a lower population density than LA proper, many of the city’s most dangerous intersections are found in Valley communities such as Van Nuys, Northridge, and Reseda.

According to an LAPD Valley Bureau report:
- Oxnard Street and Reseda Boulevard in Tarzana was the Valley’s riskiest intersection for motor vehicles in 2021.
- The worst intersection for pedestrian accidents in the Valley was Vesper Avenue and Kittridge Street in Van Nuys.
- For bicyclists, Vanowen Street and Sepulveda Boulevard—also in Van Nuys—was the riskiest Valley intersection.
The same LAPD report revealed that San Fernando Valley car accidents increased 21% in 2021. Those that involved serious injury increased by 30%.

After a horrific tragedy like a car accident, we’re committed to making sure our clients see justice. Here are a few of their stories:
- Two brothers were driving to Mammoth for their annual fishing trip when a truck driver drifted into their lane and struck their vehicle head-on. The truck driver, who walked away with minor injuries, had a criminal record that included a DUI. The two brothers were severely injured and continue to suffer mental and physical pain resulting from the accident. The PARRIS team worked tirelessly to secure justice for the men and their family. After a 16-day trial, the PARRIS team secured a massive $56.6 million for the brothers.
- A man was riding his motorcycle down Interstate 5 when a distracted driver rear-ended him, ejecting him from his bike onto the roadway. He suffered life-changing injuries, which reduced his capacity to work and provide for his family. When he called PARRIS, we set to work fighting for his rights. After taking his case to trial, the jury awarded him $49.6 million.
- In 2017, a preventable head-on car accident on the 405 freeway tragically took the lives of two brothers. The brothers were driving home from a band gig when a driver, who had been driving the wrong way on the freeway for four miles, struck their Dodge Grand Caravan head-on. PARRIS fought for the brothers’ parents, eventually securing a $10.6 million jury verdict on their behalf.

For Us, It’s Personal
When founding attorney R. Rex Parris was a young boy, his father lost his leg in a motorcycle accident. The experience left an indelible mark on Rex, who later decided to pursue a law degree to restore compensation to accident victims.
“From the day we started, we’ve known that injured victims desperately need great lawyers to represent them,” Parris said. “Without that, they can’t restore the balance in their family. That is why I have committed my life to helping people overcome the physical and financial burdens that result from an accident.”
Since then, Parris has made a name for himself as a leader in his field. The Daily Journal, Metropolitan News, and National Law each have noted Parris’s trailblazing work in personal injury law, and he regularly shares his expertise at speaking events for other attorneys.
Clients are Top Priority
At the PARRIS Law Firm, we operate on the simple motto: our commitment to our clients always comes first. This means that you take priority, and we will do everything we can to fight for your rights.
Our client care coordinators will guide you through every step of the way as our team of lawyers, paralegals, case managers, assistants, investigators, and experts prepare your case for trial.
Recovering from a car accident is hard enough. Your attention should be fully placed on your health and not on how to recover the costs that are already due. That’s why we work on contingency, meaning you’ll pay no fees until we win.
When you choose PARRIS Law Firm, we take the hassle out of your hands so that your primary focus can be where it belongs: your family and your recovery.
When the person causes an accident that injures you in some way, California law allows for the recovery of damages from an at-fault driver or their insurance company. When you file a personal injury claim with their insurance, it is up to the company to offer you a settlement to cover the costs you incurred in the accident. However, an initial settlement offer might be insufficient to cover the total costs of long-term medical damage and emotional distress. Insurance companies are ultimately acting in their own best interests—not yours. The responsibility of an adjuster is to settle your claim for the least amount of money possible to benefit the insurance company’s bottom line. Unfortunately, some insurance adjusters might even act in bad faith to achieve this end. This is precisely why it’s so important to have an advocate on your side. Our experienced team of personal injury lawyers will either negotiate for a higher settlement amount or take your case to court to get the justice you deserve. Here are some common types of damages that can be recovered under state law:
- Medical bills, including those for hospital visits, prescriptions, and visiting specialists;
- Damage to your car or the items in your car;
- Lost wages, including any future income lost due to your injuries;
- Emotional and physical pain and suffering due to you accident; and
- Loss of consortium damages for your family (the damage incurred by a loss of companionship)
The cases that we typically pursue involve negligence on the part of another driver. A driver is negligent when they fail to operate their motor vehicle safely and responsibly.
When another driver is negligent, you may be entitled to recover damages from the at-fault driver’s insurance company. This is where the PARRIS Law Firm steps in to help.
For nearly 40 years, our trusted team of San Fernando Valley car accident lawyers have fought for the settlements and verdicts that our clients deserve—with the results to prove it.

The San Fernando Valley has had higher-than-average crash statistics for many years. This is partly because many Valley residents commute to LA for work, creating congested freeways and arterial roads during the morning and evening rush hours.
However, the San Fernando Valley’s grid-like formation of wide, straight streets attracts a unique problem: street racing. Straight streets with easy freeway access, such as Balboa Blvd and Glenoaks Blvd, are hotspots for street racing, donuts, and other reckless driving activities.
A Department of Transportation spokesman told the Los Angeles Times that the increased accidents and deaths reflect the recent, pandemic-related spike in speeding and reckless driving. In addition, new vehicle features, such as heavier frames or distracting modifications, have made cars more deadly.
Ultimately, the LAPD revealed the most common causes of reported crashes in the Valley in 2021:
- DUI-related crashes: 411
- Felony hit and runs: 407
- Crashes causing severe injuries: 244
- Crashes causing a severely injured pedestrian: 65
- Fatal crashes: 47
- Hit and run crashes with severe injury: 29
- DUI crashes with severe injury: 25
- Fatal hit and run crashes: 11
- Fatal DUI crashes: 5
- Crashes causing a pedestrian fatality: 15
- Crashes causing a severely injured bicyclist: 16
- Crashes causing a bicyclist fatality: 1
