A deadly big rig crash early Thursday morning has once again drawn attention to the growing danger of semi-truck accidents on Riverside County freeways, particularly the heavily trafficked I-10 corridor. The multi-vehicle collision, which occurred just west of Dillon Road near Mile Marker 45, left two people dead and several others injured after a semi-truck barreled through the center divider and burst into flames.

The California Highway Patrol reported that the crash happened around 4:35 a.m. Dashcam footage from a nearby vehicle captured the harrowing moment the westbound big rig veered off course, plowed through the median, and collided head-on with oncoming traffic. The impact triggered a massive fireball, killing 68-year-old Maryann O’Connor of Cherry Valley and 31-year-old Aaron Paulino of Los Angeles. The driver of the truck survived and is being interviewed as part of CHP’s ongoing investigation.

Caltrans crews spent much of the day repairing the mangled guardrail and clearing debris from the scene. While the official cause remains under investigation, early reports suggest speed, fatigue, or mechanical failure may have played a role, common factors in serious truck crashes along this stretch of highway.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern. The I-10 through Riverside County is a known hotspot for semi-truck accidents. With heavy freight traffic, long-haul drivers under pressure, and narrow lanes in key areas, it's a recipe for disaster. And for too many families, like those affected by Thursday’s crash, that disaster is life-altering.

“These crashes aren’t just random events, they’re the result of negligence, whether it’s poor truck maintenance, driver fatigue, or corporate pressure to meet unrealistic deadlines,” said renowned trial attorney R. Rex Parris. “People have a right to safety on California highways. When that right is violated, they also have a right to justice.”
